The Los Angeles Lakers grabbed their second win in a row in what was an impressive blowout win ending at 127-96 against the New York Knicks at the staples center. The Lakers scored 51 points in the third quarter, making it the most points scored in a quarter ever by the franchise and points in a quarter allowed by the Knicks.

The Lakers’ bench played a major role scoring 82 points with three players scoring in double digits. Despite learning he will need surgery for a torn ligament in his left wrist, Xavier Henry was able to lead the team scoring 22 points in the 23 minutes played off the bench. Nick Young scored 22 points and Kent Bazemore added 18 points off the bench as well. Pau Gasol was not available to play tonight and is still recovering after being diagnosed with vertigo giving Chris Kaman the start at center. Kaman scored 13 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Carmelo Anthony had a tough time hitting shots going 10-21 from the field and finished the game with 29 points and nine rebounds. Tim Hardaway Jr. provided the spark off the bench for the Knicks hitting 17 of the bench’s 21 points.

The Lakers struggled to start off falling behind early and only scoring a total of 14-points in the first quarter, only making five of their 18 shots. Things turned around quickly with the team going on a 22-4 run midway through the second quarter and would lead 50-42 at the half. The Lakers continued their strong play in the second half where they made 10 of their 18 three-pointers.

Phil Jackson, now president of the Knicks, was spotted at the game sitting in a luxury suite. Former Laker Metta World Peace also attended the game and did spend time talking to his former coach Jackson.

The Lakers will take the floor again on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks in their first game of two game road trip.

Lakers Sign Summer Squad Standout

Marcus Landry Lakers 4By Kevin R. Linares

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Marcus Landry, one of the players that played in their summer league squad. Landry played well for the summer league squad and was expected by many to be on the Lakers roster for training camp.

Landry is a small forward who played his college ball at Wisconsin and was undrafted before being picked up by the New York Knicks. He has also spent some time playing for the Boston Celtics as well as the NBA’s D-League and internationally in China, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Spain. He has averaged 2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds throughout his career. If Landry is able to make the squad he is expected to make $788,873 for the season. His older brother Carl Landry has played in the NBA for 6 years and currently plays for the Sacramento Kings.

The Lakers are now at full capacity for the regular season but can add up to five more players for training camp. Landry has played for Mike D’Antoni when they were both with the Knicks and has a good shot to make the team with his ability to shoot from the three and is familiar with the style of play the Lakers are expected to run next year.

Lakers Sign Shawne Williams

(NY Daily News)

(NY Daily News)

By Kevin R. Linares

The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that they have officially signed free agent forward Shawne Williams. It was announced today by general manager Mitch Kupchak but the terms of the agreement were not released although it is believed he will make about $1.1 million.

Williams last played for the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets(now known as Brooklyn Nets). He was also on the Portland Trailblazers but did not appear in the game.

The 27-year old has played under coach Mike D’Antoni back when he was on the Knicks. He has averaged 5.7 points and 2.8 rebounds throughout his six years in the NBA. The former 17th overall pick played his college ball in Memphis where he was also born.

The signing comes on the same day forward Michael Beasley was waived by the Phoenix Suns. The Lakers had interest in Beasley and planned to acquire him after trading Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol for Chris Paul but the trade was later vetoed by David Stern. Talks were circulating around the web whether the Lakers should look to take a chance on the troubled forward after being waived.

Lamar Odom who has also run into trouble remains a free agent. Odom recently received a DUI and there have been numerous reports of him using drugs. Many Laker fans were hoping for Odom to make a return to the Lakers but it was looking less likely throughout the summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to sign forward Elias Harris who played for the Lakers in their summer league squad. Harris was reportedly signed to a two year contract for the minimum salary. The signing of Harris comes with the team needing more depth at the forward position after amnestying forward Metta World Peace who agreed to sign with the New York Knicks.

Harris played his college ball at Gonzaga where he played with Lakers back up center Robert Sacre who was also playing for the Lakers in the summer league. The former Gonzaga forward impressed the team in Las Vegas, where the NBA summer league is held, averaging 10.2 points and 5.6 rebounds.

With the Lakers adding another forward to the roster it is becoming less likely that they will look to bring back former Laker Lamar Odom who played with the Los Angeles Clippers last year. The Lakers are however still looking for a player to bring to the squad. This off season the Lakers have signed Robert Sacre, Chris Kaman, Jordan Farmar, Nick Young, Wes Johnson and now Elias Harris.
